Vintage Genuine Norlund Rafting Axe Head – 5 lb Mann Edge Tool Pennsylvania Logging Axe
$180.00 $240.00
Before chainsaws and modern logging equipment took over much of the heavy work, large rafting-pattern axes were built for demanding timber and construction work. At just one ounce shy of five pounds, this Genuine Norlund is a substantial example of that classic American pattern.
Offered for sale is an authentic Genuine Norlund rafting-pattern axe head, manufactured by Mann Edge Tool in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. Norlund axes have developed a strong following among vintage axe collectors, and the distinctive GENUINE Norlund script stamp remains crisp and clearly visible on this example. Mann Edge Tool produced the American Norlund axe line in Pennsylvania during the latter half of the 20th century.
The head has the broad cutting edge, long sweeping cheeks, heavy rectangular poll, and substantial proportions associated with the rafting pattern. Weighing 4 lbs. 15.3 oz., this is a considerably heavier axe than the smaller Hudson Bay and sporting patterns most commonly associated with the Norlund name.
The axe remains in good vintage condition with honest signs of working use. The bit remains broad and full, the eye appears solid, and the Genuine Norlund maker’s mark is exceptionally clear. There is surface wear, staining, light oxidation, and remnants of old green paint. The poll shows light mushrooming and edge deformation from previous use, all clearly shown in the photographs. I have intentionally left these signs of its working life rather than attempting to grind or reshape the head.
It measures approximately 8-1/4 inches long with a 5-1/4 inch cutting edge and weighs 4 lbs. 15.3 oz.
A great example for a collector of Norlund or Mann Edge Tool axes, vintage logging equipment, American-made edge tools, or someone looking for a substantial rafting-pattern head to hang and put back to work.
