Before power saws and modern hydraulic rescue tools became standard equipment, firefighters relied on heavy forged axes like this one to force entry, open roofs and walls, and expose hidden fire. This nearly six-pound Warren pick-head axe is a great surviving example of those early firefighting tools.

Offered for sale is an authentic Warren Axe & Tool Co. fireman’s axe head, clearly stamped:

Made by Warren Axe & Tool Company of Warren, Pennsylvania, this is a substantial full-size fireman’s pattern with a broad cutting bit on one side and a long tapered pick on the other. At 5 lbs. 12 oz., there’s nothing lightweight about it.

What I particularly like about this example is how much of the original profile remains. The broad bit is still quite full, the pick retains its impressive length and point, and the maker’s stamp remains readable. There are also traces of old red paint remaining around the head, giving it some nice evidence of its working life.

The head is being offered exactly as found and shows considerable age and use, including surface rust, oxidation, pitting, edge wear and some deformation around the pick/eye area, all clearly shown in the photographs. I have intentionally left it in its current condition rather than aggressively cleaning, grinding or refinishing it.

A great piece for a collector of antique firefighting equipment, Warren axes, Pennsylvania-made edge tools, or early American fire service equipment. It would also make an impressive display piece properly hung on a period-style handle.
